ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
FIO is a state-wide Academic Infrastructure Support Organization (AISO) established in 2009 by the Chancellor and Board of Governors of the State University System. Hosted by the University of South Florida, FIO operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with 32 institutions and agencies, including all 12 public universities, engaged in marine research, education, and resources management. FIO provides collaboration opportunities across academia, government, and the private sector for educational, training, research, and public outreach for students and scientists across Florida.
FIO operates three major sea-going vessels, the R/V Hogarth, the R/V Weatherbird II, and now the R/V Western Flyer, along with the land-based Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton, FL. Supporting and enabling research and education across Florida, FIO offers unique opportunities for college-level education and research studying the marine ecosystems offered along the coasts of Florida.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is vital to the commissioning and ongoing operation of FIO's newest research platform, the Research Vessel Western Flyer. Per US Coast Guard regulations, the vessel requires engineers who are licensed. FIO's two other research vessels do not require licensed engineers due to the size, tonnage, and on-board equipment.
The Licensed Second Assistant Engineer will assist and advise FIO's Licensed Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer with improvements, modifications, and general maintenance of the R/V Western Flyer's shipboard engines and systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer in maintaining the vessel's engines, generators, frames and winches, and all other mechanical and electrical equipment and systems required for the daily operation of the vessel. Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer in maintaining all other operational logs, monitoring fuel and lube oil consumption, and maintaining onboard parts inventory for all vessel systems. Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer in maintaining vessel's electronic maintenance and inventory control and management system, including continuing the vessel's current crack inspection program. Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer in overseeing all shipyard work for any and all equipment listed in Primary Duties. Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer in overseeing and managing engineering vendors and subcontractors, and shipyard shops, as their work pertains to the vessel's equipment listed above. .
Work and sail as relief First Assistant Engineer, if license is of sufficient size. Other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
HS Diploma required.
1 year of experience sailing as an Engineering Officer on tugs, supply vessels, or other vessel of similar size and power to R/V WESTERN FLYER (117 feet LOA, 2500 horsepower, diesel/electric drive). U.S. Coast Guard License, minimum rating as follows: Second Assistant Engineer (Limited) of Less Than 1,600 Gross Registered Tons Upon Oceans. All STCW Certifications and Certificates as required for U.S. Coast Guard License above. Current U.S. Passport for making International Voyages.
PREFERRED:
Associates or Bachelors in an engineering field, or certifications from an engineering trade school preferred. Experience aboard U.S. Academic Research Vessels a plus.
