Position Description

This position supervises seven Corrosion Technicians who service our Division 8 Pipelines (SNG, TGP, EEC) in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. The preferred office location for the Corrosion Supervisor is Kinder Morgan's Birmingham Regional Headquarters located at 569 Brookwood Village, Birmingham, AL 35209 but the position could office out of other Kinder Morgan locations within the coverage area based on business need, the candidate's location and office availability including but not limited to the Atlanta, GA area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise division corrosion control program in order to achieve goals within budgeted funds and available personnel; plan projects and designate accountability for assignments, review progress, direct change in priority and schedule as needed to assure work is completed in an efficient and timely manner.
• Participate in the selection/progression of staff, salary change consideration and disciplinary matters.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide training and motivation to make full use of individual capabilities and to meet changing system demands.
• Orient new employees as to procedures, policies, location and operation of equipment or assign such orientation and familiarization to appropriate personnel.
• Coordinate annual refresher, safety and emergency response training.
• Develop and administer capital and maintenance budgets based on staffing and resource requirements, cost estimates, objectives and goals.
• Monitor and document expenditures assuring compliance with approved budget and staffing levels.
• Design corrosion monitoring and cathodic protection systems through complex activities including specifications, calculations, graphic and statistical analysis, power assessment, and evaluation of survey data. Confer with departments responsible for contracts, environmental compliance and right-of-way procurement.
• Prepare or assign preparation of contract drawings/sketches, specifications and bid invitations when outside contractors are to be used.
• Plan, coordinate, and direct jobs, determine priority of corrosion control projects and installation of protective measures.
• Consult Technical Manager on major projects, budget proposals, and priorities.
• Establish and maintain a professional relationship with local, regional, and national AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) organizations.
• Represent Company at regional inter-company corrosion coordinating committees.
• Delegate and review Company's notification to various agencies, companies, and committees of corrosion protection systems.
• Generate reports from various computer databases to demonstrate compliance with company and regulatory agencies.
• Review as-built drawings and annual survey data. Assist technicians as needed with the analysis of field test data from annual and interim surveys and determination of best corrective action.
• Investigate corrosion problems in the field through survey work and/or research and may coordinate some activities with other companies and/or vendors when necessary.
• Resolve cathodic protection and interference problems including measures to be taken, as well as any system adjustments. Implement corrective action through corrosion and maintenance personnel or oversees work of outside contractors.
• Coordinate and direct Corrosion Technicians and contracted services.
• Maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets, employees, and the general public. Lead by example, drive Kinder Morgan safety culture throughout the organization.

Position Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Education:
Bachelor degree or higher in Engineering, Science, or related field from an accredited school or relevant professional experience that has developed equivalent engineering, project management and/or corrosion skills while serving our Country in the military or while working in the private industry sector.

Experience

• Knowledge of pipeline operations, project management, risk management concepts, engineering principles, and DOT Part 192 regulations
• Basic principle of statistics and cost/benefit analysis.
• Design, construction, and troubleshooting of corrosion monitoring and cathodic protection systems.
• Standard Practice, procedures, tools, materials, and equipment used in cathodic protection of natural gas pipelines.
• Corrosion instrumentation; data collectors, current mappers and GPS programs.
• Design, implementation and remediation of AC mitigation systems and DC transit systems.
• Occupational hazards and required safety precautions related assigned duties.
• Pipeline operations and location.
• Utility operations and right-of-way.
• Protective coating used on natural gas pipelines.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

• A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license is required.
• Compliance with any necessary professional license or certification stipulated by local, state or federal agencies or the Company, now or in the future.

• Provide corrosion control training to operations supervisors and field personnel, mentor and/or verify Company Operator Qualification program.
• Field project management support of pipeline integrity projects, direct assessment and special permit locations.
• Develop personnel; plan, train, test and motivate your direct reports to progress through Kinder Morgan Corrosion Specialist level IV competencies.

Physical Demands:

• Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.
• Work outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather situations.
• Walk to and amidst work and/or construction sites, climb in and out of trenches, working around heavy equipment, negotiate rough terrain with areas of loose rock and work within confined spaces.
• Sense of sight, hearing, and smell to aid in the identification of systems and equipment malfunction.
• Distinguish basic colors.
• Operate a 4WD vehicle for off road driving
• Perform physical labor in a variety of extreme climactic conditions, including walking, bending, stooping, and lifting.
• Work in office environment; approximately 70% of the time.

Working Conditions:

• Position subject to 24-hour call-out, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Climatic conditions are determined by location assignment and may include severe seasonal changes including both winter conditions with frequent snow or extreme summer heat and sun, depending upon geographic location.
• Survey work frequently involves getting dirty, sweaty, dusty, and hot, especially during summer months.
• Travel to remote areas within a particular region may involve extended periods of driving, both on and off road and could involve exposure to electrical shock, very difficult terrain, traffic hazards, snakes, spiders and other crawling and flying insects, cuts, bruises, etc.
• Schedule and monitor own work.
• Extensive travel may be required including overnight stays for several days.
• Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities.

Above the minimum requirement; not required but advantageous in this position:

• Demonstrated leadership and management skills and prior supervisory experience.
• AMPP "Cathodic Protection Technician (CP2)" certification desirable.
• Proficiency with Pipeline Compliance System (PCS) software
• Basic knowledge of cathodic protection.
• Knowledge of piping, valves and pressures.
• Knowledge of pipeline operations.
